Some years back I had some problems with my lower back. The spasms were so bad and painful that there were days that I did not get off the bed and go to work. The worst thing is that lying down did not even fully alleviate the pain either. Standing and walking gets so painful that you wanted to cry and just give up on life.

The pain was caused by muscle spasms secondary to instability in the lumbar spine. There was slight straightening in the spine that caused the spasms. It was all posture-related and was caused by bad seating habits while at work. It was also aggravated by the bad office chair that I was using and by the lack of lumbar support of my car seats.

After a grueling 6 month physical therapy, the problem went away. But this time though I made some changes in my daily habits, the most helpful of which was I started using lumbar support pillows.

Lumbar support pillows are a great way to maintain the natural shape of the lumbar spine while you are seated. Contrary to popular belief, the spine is not straight. Nor should it be straight. The natural curvature of the spine is S-shape. Any deviation from this shape will cause some problems, painful problems.

That is why it is very important to always be conscious of your sitting posture; most especially while at work. Office work can get very intense sometimes and we sometimes fail to constantly take note of our posture and start seating badly unconsciously after a while. This is where lumbar support pillows can come in handy because it helps maintain the optimum seating posture such that the weight of your upper back and torso does not put undue stress on the lower back muscles which could cause it to tense up and spasm.

Spasms, depending on their intensity can change the natural curvature of the spine which can cause pain and even nerve compression. Nerve compression can be a serious problem if not corrected because it can affect the nervous system and make some of your extremities numb. If the nerve compression happens in the lumbar spine, you could get numbing sensation on your legs.

Using a lumbar support pillow on your office chair and your car seat will surely help maintain that good lower back condition and help alleviate any bad posture problem.

Having low back pains is literally a pain in the ass so be sure to always maintain good posture by always using an orthopedic chair at the office as well as a lumbar pillow. Stop muscle spasm by always being conscious about your seating habits.

If symptoms persist, it is always best to consult your doctor.
